Over the last 100 years, mankind did not step forward; but rather leapt forward. Sandoz, with its long tradition of discovering new substances, expanding in new industry fields and forming new alliances, is a perfect reflection of this unprecedented human drive towards progress. What had started as a dyestuffs factory in Basel in 1886, is today one of the world's leading manufacturers of generic medication. In between, Sandoz set milestones in the history of pharmaceutical research and development. Over the years, Sandoz diversified into the agribusiness and nutrition sectors, established subsidiaries all over the world, and finally merged with Ciba in 1996 to form Novartis. Seven years later, the historical name Sandoz celebrates its return, uniting all Novartis generic companies under one single, global brand.
